“You should pick out the correct symbols
in the map of my landscape
to understand the colors of my soul.
Rich soil, the brown collar of the road,
and the rocks piled at field corners.
Haircap moss climbing on top of a hummock
shelters the morning star
and a blueberry flower.”
Oili Sainila's Down Memory Lane: Collected Poems translated by Sirkka-Liisa Leinonen (Seutu 2021) includes poems from the author's two previous collections. The speaker of the poems travels in Finnish landscapes from the 1960s until the present, from childhood to advanced age. Her life experiences conjure up a milieu where the reader can perceive the ever-developing, though still incomplete, landscape of her inner world.
“Valitse oikeat merkit
maisemastani
että ymmärrät sieluni värit:
Muheva multa, tien ruskea kaulus
ja kivet, peltojen kulmiin kasatut.
Karhunsammal, metsämättäälle kivunnut
kätkenyt aamutähden
ja mustikankukan.”
Oili Sainilan Down Memory Lane: Collected Poems, jonka on kääntänyt englanniksi Sirkka-Liisa Leinonen, (Seutu 2021) perustuu kirjailijan kahden aikaisemman runokirjan teksteihin. Runojen puhuja vaeltaa suomalaisissa maisemissa 1960-luvulta nykyaikaan, lapsuudesta vanhuuteen. Hänen
elämänvaiheensa ja kokemuksensa avaavat lukijalle näkymän jatkuvasti rakentuvaan ja muutoksille avoimeen mielenmaisemaan.
