Before credit cards and smart phones were used as means of payments, travellers used special forms of paper money that partly worked in the same way. Most of these instruments, which were called circular notes, letters of credit and travellers cheques, have now been forgotten, although thousands of different issues were in use.
This publication reveals the fascinating practices associated with these issues that enabled money to be safely carried, withdrawn from banks, and spent by travellers. The information presented can be useful for collectors of paper money, as well as for researchers of travel and financial history.
